About the Producer

Uganda Rwenzori Mountains - Extended Anaerobic Fermentation

Vibrant, floral and wonderfully expressive, Uganda Rwenzori Mountains is a coffee that showcases the exciting future of Ugandan speciality coffee. Roasted to bring out its lively fruit character, this coffee bursts with notes of blackberry, delicate violet florals, and finishes with the juicy sweetness of red grape, creating a beautifully layered cup with remarkable clarity and complexity.

Grown at 1,800 metres above sea level in the breathtaking Rwenzori Mountains, often referred to as the Mountains of the Moon, this coffee benefits from fertile volcanic soils, cool mountain temperatures and abundant rainfall. These ideal growing conditions allow the coffee cherries to mature slowly, developing greater sweetness, vibrant acidity and exceptional flavour complexity.

After careful harvesting, this coffee undergoes Agri Evolve's signature extended anaerobic fermentation process, designed to maximise sweetness, complexity and fruit expression. Freshly picked coffee cherries are carefully sorted before being placed into sealed fermentation barrels, each holding approximately 145kg of cherries. The cherries remain sealed for four days, allowing naturally occurring yeasts and microorganisms to slowly ferment the fruit in an oxygen-free environment. This extended fermentation encourages the development of vibrant fruit flavours, elegant floral aromatics and exceptional sweetness while maintaining a clean, refined cup profile.

Once fermentation is complete, the cherries are carefully spread across raised drying beds, where they are turned regularly throughout the drying process to promote even moisture reduction and preserve quality. This meticulous approach ensures the distinctive characteristics developed during fermentation are retained all the way through to the final cup.

Produced from the renowned SL14 and SL28 varieties, Uganda Rwenzori Mountains is a coffee that perfectly balances innovation with terroir. Expect juicy blackberry sweetness, delicate notes of violet and a lingering finish of ripe red grape, all supported by a silky body and lively acidity. Whether enjoyed as a filter coffee or a fruit-forward espresso, it delivers a vibrant, memorable cup that demonstrates why Uganda is rapidly becoming one of the most exciting origins in speciality coffee.

This lot has been produced by Agri Evolve, an organisation founded in 2016 with a mission to transform coffee production throughout western Uganda. Recognising that many farmers lacked access to quality processing facilities and were often forced to sell their coffee for low prices, Agri Evolve created a transparent buying model that pays farmers fairly for freshly harvested cherries while reinvesting export profits into local communities.

Today, Agri Evolve works alongside more than 23,000 registered coffee farmers across a 200-kilometre stretch of the Rwenzori Mountains, providing agronomy training, modern processing facilities, equipment and milling services. This long-term investment has helped improve both coffee quality and farmer livelihoods, while firmly establishing Uganda as one of the world's most exciting emerging speciality coffee origins.
